MBT-Basic Training

Who Should Attend?

This training is intended for professionals who want to learn how to effectively treat patients with personality disorders.

Prerequisites:

  • Applicants must have previous therapeutic experience with adults with personality disorders.
  • This training is ideal for mental health and related professionals interested in treating personality disorders.

To be eligible for the training, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Mental health professional degree (e.g., mental health specialist, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, psychotherapist)
  • Completion of relevant studies, such as those on theories of personality disorder that demonstrate an understanding of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, biological, systems, and social theories.
  • At least 1 year of therapeutic experience treating individuals with personality disorders, either individually or in groups, or a commitment to do so.
  • Commitment to supervised professional practice and ethical standards is essential.

Desirable Condition:

  • Personal psychotherapy experience.

Mandatory Prerequisite:

  • Prior to the training, participants must complete the online course “Mentalizing and Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adults (MBT Adult) – Introduction”. The online training will be opened 1 month before the in-person training days and will remain accessible for 1 year. The interface will be translated into Hungarian.
  • The online course covers basic theories in four hours, providing basic knowledge.
  • Theoretical part: The training consists of a basic online course and 3 full days.
  • Supervision: After the theoretical education, online supervision takes place under the leadership of AFC London, for those who require it, showing video or audio recordings of the therapy sessions made with the patient’s consent. The Hungarian-language supervision work is being organized.

 

To obtain the MBT therapist title, the following is required (Practitioner level):

  • Practitioners of MBT should have a qualification in a mental health profession, a thorough knowledge of mental disorders, particularly personality disorders, and previous experience in psychological work with individuals and/or groups.
  • MBT trainees must read the MBT handbook and attend a 3-day basic induction course
  • Completion of the 2-day MBT Practitioner Certificate course recognized by the AFC (formerly MBT Advanced course)
  • Four individual patients or two groups or two individual patients + one group should be treated with MBT as the primary intervention for a minimum of 24 sessions.
  • Treated clients (at least 2 individuals or 1 group) must have a primary diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder.
  • The cases are professionally supervised by an MBT supervisor certified by the Anna Freud Center (AFC).
  • Individual sessions of each treatment must be recorded (video). If video is not feasible, an audio recording is also acceptable in consultation with the supervisor. A minimum of three 15-minute sessions of each treatment selected by the trainee must be submitted, referencing the MBT competencies outlined in the MBT Training Manual.
  • Initially, supervision must be attended weekly individually or in groups.
  • A written summary must be prepared at the conclusion of each case.

Fee for the 3-day training: HUF 390,000

It is possible to pay the fee in instalments, in which case, the first payment of 100,000 HUF is due on 20 June 2024, and the remaining 290,000 HUF is due on 30 September 2024.

Anthony W. Bateman

A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, psychotherapist,
the UK president of the European Society for Personality Disorders,
the MBT coordinator at the Anna Freud Centre in London,
a professor at University College London, and
an honorary professor at the University of Copenhagen.

Anthony W. Bateman is an outstanding psychiatrist and psychotherapist who has made significant contributions to psychological and mental health research. His work primarily focuses on borderline personality disorder, for which he has introduced innovative treatment approaches. Together with Peter Fonagy and other colleagues, he developed Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), which emphasizes the relationship between the client and therapist, as well as the development of mentalization capacity. His numerous scientific publications and books have contributed to the advancement of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic practice. Through his work, he has become a respected member of the psychotherapy community and actively participates in international conferences. His research and therapeutic methods continue to be of fundamental importance in clinical practice.
